Minister affirms RI's commitment to climate justice at the UN

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Environment Minister Jumhur Hidayat has outlined Indonesia's commitment to just climate action before representatives of the UN member states, in line with President Prabowo Subianto's directives.

Hidayat made the remarks at the Interactive Leaders Dialogue on Climate Action and the Just Transition at the 81st UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday (Sept 23), according to a statement received here on Friday.

He said Indonesia's climate agenda is not merely aimed at meeting global targets, but is also directly designed to boost economic resilience, create green jobs, and protect vulnerable communities.

"The Paris Agreement is our compass. However, as the space to keep the global temperature rise within 1.5 degrees Celsius continues to narrow, our challenge is to bridge global commitments into real outcomes, guided by justice and the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities," Hidayat said.

He explained that, in line with President Prabowo's direction, the Indonesian government is translating the ambition of its Enhanced NDC and Second NDC into a target of net-zero emissions by 2060 or sooner, through a comprehensive economic transformation.

Some of the concrete actions already underway include ensuring that greenhouse gas absorption exceeds emissions released, through the protection of terrestrial ecosystems in the forestry sector via the Forestry and Other Land Uses (FOLU) Net Sink 2030 programme.

Other measures include accelerating waste and wastewater management and practicing circular economy.

In addition, efforts are being made to pair the transition of older industries with the development of new low-carbon factories, supported by the responsible application of Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) technology, along with a massive expansion of new and renewable energy.

"Our transition must be just, orderly, state-led, and people-centered. The energy transformation must strengthen energy resilience and affordability, create decent green jobs and local added value, and protect vulnerable communities," Hidayat said.
