Appollis heartbroken as Orlando Pirates part ways with another close friend

Orlando Pirates winger Oswin Appollis has reacted to the departure of Deano van Rooyen, with the pair having developed a close friendship during their time together at the club.

Appollis and Van Rooyen formed a strong bond after the Bafana Bafana winger joined the Buccaneers in July 2024.

Following the announcement that Van Rooyen and Pirates had agreed to part ways by mutual consent, Appollis took to his Instagram story and shared a heartfelt message for his former teammate.

“My Bru ❤️,” Appollis posted.

Van Rooyen’s departure marks another emotional blow for Appollis, who has seen several of his close friends leave his side in recent months.

Relebohile Mofokeng, another player with whom Appollis shared a close relationship, recently left Pirates to join Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise.

The winger also suffered the loss of another close friend, Jayden Adams, following the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup. The pair had developed a strong friendship dating back to their teenage years.

Van Rooyen’s exit also leaves the Buccaneers with just one recognised right-back in their squad, increasing the club’s need for reinforcements in that position.

Pirates confirmed the defender’s departure in an official statement.

“Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm that Deano van Rooyen will be leaving the club, after the player and the club agreed to part ways by mutual consent,” the club said.

“The decision follows open conversations between Deano and the Club, with both sides agreeing that the time is right for him to begin a new chapter in his career.

“Van Rooyen joined the Buccaneers from Stellenbosch FC ahead of the 2024/25 season, arriving as one of the most consistent full-backs in the Betway Premiership.

“At the Club, he delivered exactly what was asked of him. Whether starting or coming off the bench, Deano carried himself as a model professional throughout his time at the club – where he recorded over 50 appearances.

“Orlando Pirates Football Club would like to thank Deano for his contribution and wish him well in his future endeavours.”
