Habagat to bring rains in Luzon; fair weather over Visayas, Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines — The southwest monsoon, or habagat, will bring rains to parts of Luzon while generally fair weather conditions are expected in Visayas and Mindanao on Saturday, according to the state weather bureau.

In the 5 a.m. weather forecast of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration, weather specialist Veronica Torres said the habagat would affect parts of Northern and Central Luzon.

“The southwest monsoon is expected to bring rains to the Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Batanes, Cagayan, Zambales, Bataan and Pampanga. Residents should be wary of possible flooding and landslides,” Torres said.

Torres added that Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies, with chances of thunderstorms in the afternoon.

She also said that more areas in Luzon may be affected by the habagat on Sunday, particularly the Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), and Occidental and Oriental Mindoro.

Meanwhile, fair weather will be seen over Visayas and Mindanao, with chances of thunderstorms. Torres also said that these conditions will continue to prevail over these areas until Monday, while the western portion of Visayas may experience rains on Tuesday and Wednesday.

She said that no gale warning was raised for any of the country’s seaboards.

The state weather bureau also issued a temperature forecast for the following areas:

  • Metro Manila: 26°C to 31°C
  • Laoag: 26°C to 31°C
  • Baguio: 17°C to 20°C
  • Tagaytay: 23°C to 30°C
  • Tuguegarao: 26°C to 34°C
  • Legazpi: 26°C to 32°C
  • Kalayaan Islands: 26°C to 32°C
  • Puerto Princesa: 25°C to 32°C
  • Iloilo: 25°C to 31°C
  • Cebu: 27°C to 33°C
  • Tacloban: 27°C to 34°C
  • Cagayan de Oro: 25°C to 34°C
  • Davao: 24°C to 33°C
  • Zamboanga: 25°C to 34°C

Weather disturbances outside the PAR

Torres said that the tropical depression being monitored outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) could still enter the country. It was last estimated to be 1,195 kilometers east of Northeastern Mindanao.

On the other hand, Tropical Storm Saudel may enter the PAR by Monday and may enhance the habagat, especially in Luzon. It was last located 2,710 kilometers east of Northern Luzon.

Lastly, the low-pressure area, which was formerly tropical cyclone Neneng, is not forecast to re-enter the PAR and is moving farther from the country’s landmass. /das
