Roberto De Zerbi Embraces Tottenham's Ambitious Premier League Dream

Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi has said he is determined to help the club fulfil chief executive Vinai Venkatesham's ambitious vision of winning the Premier League title in the future. Venkatesham's comments this week about Tottenham's long-term objective of becoming Premier League champions drew ridicule from rival supporters, given the club's recent struggles. The north London side have not won the English top-flight title since 1961 and narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of last season. Having finished 17th in each of the last two campaigns, Tottenham are currently ninth in the table after recovering from a difficult start to the season.
They sit 12 points behind leaders Arsenal ahead of Saturday's trip to Leeds United.
Asked about Venkatesham's remarks, De Zerbi said he was encouraged by the ambition being shown by the club's hierarchy.
"It was great to hear what Vinai said. I think the first thing for the people who stay at this club and work at this club is to be ambitious. But to be ambitious, you have to show it."
"You have to show the right mentality every day, game by game, because words alone are not enough."
"What Vinai, the Lewis family and Johan Lange are doing is something special because, in the last two seasons, you can see they have changed a lot of things at this club."
"For me as a coach, for my staff and for the players, we have to show the best version of ourselves to deserve being at this club," he said.
A summer transfer window that brought in Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and several other new signings raised expectations of an improved campaign.
However, De Zerbi's side failed to win any of their first six league matches.
The turnaround began with a draw at Manchester United, followed by victories over Coventry City, Chelsea and Crystal Palace, helping Tottenham climb away from the relegation zone.
De Zerbi said the key to the team's revival has been maintaining the right attitude and mentality.
"With the right behaviour, with the right mentality, being hungry every day and fighting for results, that is the most important thing we can do from our side," he said.
