Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) kicks off its Indian Super League (ISL) season against NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) on October 12 in Guwahati.

This is the third match of the season between the two teams, with MBSG beating NEUFC on penalties in the Durand Cup semifinals, and they also played out a 1-1 draw in the group stage of IFA Shield 2026.

With an agonising end to the previous ISL season, losing the title on goal difference to bitter rival East Bengal, MBSG is hoping its new Scottish striker, Lee Erwin, will be the answer to its troubles.

Erwin, who has previously played for Leeds United and also in the UEFA Europa Conference League for Finnish top-flight side Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi, is in his first season in Indian football.

Having plied his trade over 14 clubs around the world, the journeyman has started his life well at MBSG with solid performances in the Durand Cup, where he scored two goals as his team reached the final, again losing to East Bengal.

However, the last time the Mariners played NEUFC, Erwin scored the opening goal and is hoping to keep that momentum alive.

“We have a lot of quality in the squad. There’re a lot of people who can score goals, and of course, that’s why I’m here. I’ll try and score as much as I can, but I think there’s a lot of quality in the squad that can get us those goals to win the league,” he said in the pre-match press conference.

When asked if he feels the pressure of playing for a club with such a rich history, he said, “It’s a pleasure more than a pressure to play for such a historic club like Mohun. It’s part of our job. We need to adapt to the situations, different cultures in football, different expectations.”

The Mariners’ objective for the season, as always, is to win the title and having a fit and focused squad is key to that.

Erwin thinks “the atmosphere amongst the squad is very good, especially when you have the hurdles that we’ve had in the season,” referring to the stop-start pre-season they have had due to the international friendlies and other competitions that have taken place during the time the team had planned a comprehensive pre-season.
