Indonesia backs China, Nepal rescue efforts after deadly floods

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia fully supports rescue and post-disaster response efforts by the Chinese and Nepalese governments following deadly flash floods in the Gyirong border area, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela said.

"Indonesia extends its deepest sympathy and condolences over the disaster in Gyirong, on the China-Nepal border, which caused deaths, injuries and damage to public infrastructure," Mulachela said.

He said Indonesia fully supports the rescue and post-disaster response efforts being carried out by the Chinese and Nepalese governments.

Speaking here Thursday, Nabyl said the Foreign Ministry would continue monitoring Indonesians in the affected areas through the Indonesian Embassy in Beijing, the Honorary Consulate in Kathmandu, and the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka.

He said there had been no reports of Indonesians affected by the disaster. About 45 Indonesians live in Nepal, mostly in Kathmandu, where they work in the hospitality sector.

Besides Indonesians working in Nepal, the ministry is paying particular attention to Indonesians visiting the South Asian country.

"To support protection and monitoring efforts, the Indonesian Embassy in Dhaka has urged travel agencies bringing Indonesians to Nepal to promptly report their whereabouts and conditions, especially those on trekking trips," Nabyl said.

The ministry urged all Indonesians in affected areas to remain vigilant and follow instructions from local authorities.

According to Türkiye's Anadolu news agency, Chinese and Nepalese authorities said more than 1,300 people, including nearly 900 foreign nationals, remained missing as search operations continued.

Satellite imagery indicated that the flash floods may have been triggered by large blocks of ice melting from glaciers in the Himalayan mountains.
