Minister urges local governments to maximize public spaces for MSMEs

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar has urged local governments to make greater use of public facilities and spaces to support the growth of Indonesia’s micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

He made the remarks at the launch of the 1001 People's Markets program in Depok, West Java, according to a statement issued in Jakarta on Monday.

"I hope all cities and districts make as much use of public facilities as possible for MSMEs. Let's establish as many 1001 People's Markets as possible. God willing, our MSMEs will thrive," Iskandar said.

He said public spaces have the potential to become centers of economic activity while providing local businesses with broader market access.

Under the initiative, public spaces would serve not only as places for people to gather and engage in activities but also as venues connecting MSME operators with consumers.

Iskandar described the 1001 People's Markets program as an effort to optimize existing public facilities and generate greater economic value for local communities.

He said regional government support and collaboration among various stakeholders would be essential to turning public spaces into active commercial areas where businesses can sell their products, interact with customers, and expand their markets.

Alongside efforts to expand access to selling spaces, he also called on MSME operators to improve product quality to remain competitive and earn consumer trust.

"MSMEs must move up to the next level. Their products must meet high-quality standards. This is for all of us," he said.

Iskandar also highlighted Depok's economic potential, supported by its large population, educational activities, and dynamic local economy, which could create opportunities for local businesses to grow.

One proposal he raised was the development of a Halal Street, a dedicated area for halal culinary MSMEs that could expand local economic activity and strengthen Depok's appeal as a culinary destination.
