Draft law dealing with legacy of Northern Ireland Troubles passed by House of Commons

Translate

Draft legislation addressing the legacy of the Northern Ireland Troubles has cleared the House of Commons.

Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Bryant insisted that veterans and bereaved families "deserve answers".

MPs backed the Northern Ireland Troubles Bill at its third reading on Tuesday by 330 votes to 178, a majority of 152. It will now go to the House of Lords for further scrutiny.

First brought to Parliament last year, the measure will overhaul the previous Conservative government’s Legacy Act via a reformed Legacy Commission.

An emotional Sir Chris told the Commons on Tuesday evening: "This Bill isn’t about one group or another. It’s not about special favours for one group or another.

"It’s about honesty, candour, the pursuit of justice, and most importantly, truth. Because in the end, it’s only truth that can really set us free."
