Pearly-Thinaah end 12-year wait for Asian Games medal
AICHI: Malaysia's 12-year wait for an Asian Games women's doubles medal is over after Pearly Tan–M Thinaah reached the semi-finals of the Aichi-Nagoya Games on Sunday.
The world No. 5 pair beat India's world No. 26 Gayatri Gopichand–Treesa Jolly 21-18, 21-9 in 42 minutes in the quarter-finals at Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium.
Pearly–Thinaah are assured of at least a bronze medal, ending Malaysia's medal drought in the event since the 2014 Incheon Games.
Vivian Hoo–Woon Khe Wei were the last Malaysian women's doubles pair to reach the Asian Games podium, winning bronze in Incheon.
Pearly–Thinaah face a tougher test in the semi-finals against either China's world No. 1 Liu Sheng Shu–Tan Ning or Taiwan's Hsieh Pei Shan–Hung En Tzu.
