QC gov’t says La Mesa Dam still on Alert Level 3 despite heavy rains

MANILA, Philippines — The water level of La Mesa Dam in Quezon City slightly increased but remained under Alert Level 3 on Tuesday amid the heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon or habagat, the Quezon City local government said.
Citing the QC Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council as of 5 a.m., the dam’s water level stood at 79.71 meters (m) as of 5 a.m., from its last record of 79.69 m.

It breached the critical threshold of 79.50 m but was still below the overflow elevation of 80.15 m.

The city government then warned that excess water from the La Mesa Dam may affect low-lying areas along Tullahan River such as Fairview, Forest Hills Subdivision, Quirino Highway, and San Bartolome.
Meanwhile, the alert levels were lifted from Marikina River and Quirino-Tullahan River as their water status declined from 15.09 m to 14.98 m and from 38.44 m to 38.44 m, respectively.
There was still no alert level raised over San Juan River, where its water level rose from 11.79 m to 11.97 m.
In its 5 a.m. weather forecast on Tuesday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration said that the habagat will continue to prevail over western portions of Luzon and Visayas.

Monsoon rains, or continuous rains, are expected over Benguet, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, and Occidental Mindoro. Meanwhile, occasional rains will affect Abra, Ilocos Sur, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Laguna, Rizal, Oriental Mindoro, and Metro Manila.
The rest of Luzon, Negros Island Region, and the rest of Western Visayas will see cloudy skies and scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms. /mr
