Pagasa: Water levels of 8 of 9 monitored dams rise over past 24 hours

MANILA, Philippines — The water levels of eight of nine monitored dams across the country increased over the past 24 hours amid heavy rains from the southwest monsoon, or habagat, the state weather bureau said on Tuesday. 

In its latest update as of 8 a.m., the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that the water levels of San Roque, Angat, Pantabangan, Ambuklao, Ipo, La Mesa, Magat, and Caliraya rose while the Binga Dam saw a slight decrease.

The water level of San Roque Dam in Pangasinan saw the biggest increase of 2.25 meters (m), from 270.90 m to 273.15 m. Angat Dam in Bulacan and Pantabangan Dam in Nueva Ecija followed, with increases of 1.13 m and 0.50 m, from 183.73 m to 184.86 m and from 187.20 m to 187.70 m, respectively.

The water levels of the following dams also slightly increased: Ambuklao Dam in Benguet from 751.17 m to 751.49 m (0.32 m); Ipo Dam in Bulacan from 100.60 m to 100.89 m (0.29 m); La Mesa Dam in Quezon City from 79.46 m to 79.70 m (0.24 m); Magat Dam in Isabela from 178.06 m to 178.72 (0.21 m); and Caliraya Dam in Laguna from 286.86 m to 287 m (0.14 m).

Meanwhile, the water level at Binga Dam in Benguet declined by 0.04 m, from 574.52 m to 574.48 m.

Pagasa also said it opened two gates of Ambuklao Dam (0.8 m) and three gates of Binga Dam (1.5 m) on Tuesday.

In its separate 5 a.m. weather forecast on Tuesday, the bureau said that the habagat will continue to prevail over western portions of Luzon and Visayas.

Monsoon rains, or continuous rains, are expected over Benguet, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, and Occidental Mindoro. Meanwhile, occasional rains will affect Abra, Ilocos Sur, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Laguna, Rizal, Oriental Mindoro, and Metro Manila. 

The rest of Luzon, Negros Island Region, and the rest of Western Visayas will see cloudy skies and scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms. /mr
