DepEd expresses concern about Ateneo de Zamboanga shooting, vows help

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) on Tuesday said it is ready to extend support to affected students and personnel in the shooting incident that occurred at a private school in Zamboanga City.

DepEd issued the statement after expressing “grave concern” over the incident.

“DepEd stands with the Ateneo de Zamboanga community during this difficult time and is ready to extend whatever support and assistance we can to the affected learners, families, school personnel, and concerned authorities,” DepEd said.

According to the DepEd, it is already coordinating with mental health partners to provide psychological first aid and psychosocial support to those affected.

Meanwhile, the department urged the public not to spread unverified information regarding the incident online, as well as not to share sensitive photos, videos or details about the incident, especially since minors are involved.

As of writing, authorities said the incident is still being resolved. 

At least two victims have already been recorded in the incident, but their current conditions are still being determined. /mr
