Indonesia launches family academy to build youth character

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Population and Family Development has introduced the Indonesian Family Academy to enhance family well-being through character education for young people.

"For our ministry, families are the smallest and most foundational unit within a country. Hence, improving the country will require efforts to improve families," Population and Family Development Minister Wihaji said in a statement received here on Saturday.

Recognizing the importance of strengthening families to nurture future generations, he said the ministry launched the Indonesian Family Academy as a learning platform for unmarried Indonesians aged 10 to 24.

He added that the initiative is designed to integrate existing related programs, including the Planned Generation (GenRe) and Population-Aware School (SSK) initiatives, through four key pillars.

The pillars focus on family life preparedness, population ecology, digital literacy and ethics, and optimizing Indonesia's demographic dividend.

Wihaji noted that the ministry views family resilience as the foundation for developing the quality human capital needed to support the country's target of eight percent economic growth.

He also highlighted the need to help young Indonesians navigate the digital age and prepare for adulthood.

In this regard, the minister expressed concern that adolescents spend between eight and 10 hours a day on smartphones, warning that excessive screen time could negatively affect their mindsets and mental health.

"We are now facing a brand-new challenge. This is not only about readiness for work; more than that, this is about preparedness for life," he said, stressing the need for support that extends beyond formal education.

Against that backdrop, Wihaji explained that the Indonesian Family Academy is intended to help adolescents build strong character, understand life's dynamics, and prepare for future challenges.

He also expressed hope that participants would share the knowledge they gain with their peers, enabling the program to reach a broader audience.
