Mobile police station to be set up near Najib’s residence

A mobile police station will be set up near former prime minister Najib Razak’s residence at Langgak Duta here from tomorrow to facilitate security arrangements during any transfer from prison to the home.

Sentul police chief Anuar Bakri Salam said the mobile police station is not intended to provide 24-hour security for Najib.

“It is to provide security during his return, including for local and foreign media and neighbours, as well as to prevent traffic congestion, and manage the presence of supporters,” he said.

Asked whether the residence had been designated as the location for Najib’s house arrest, Anuar said police had yet to receive any official confirmation.

“I cannot confirm this because I have not received any information either, but one of Najib’s official residences is under my jurisdiction. There is also a possibility that other residences belonging to him are being considered,” he said.

He said that based on the information he had received, the prisons department would be responsible for monitoring Najib if he serves the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.

He said four prisons department officers had visited the residence yesterday to conduct an inspection and assessment.

“The police will only facilitate Najib’s movement and, at the same time, ensure the safety of the media,” he said.

He said the police deployment during the process is expected to comprise one supervisor and two personnel, supported by a mobile patrol vehicle unit.

Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar was yesterday reported as saying the standard operating procedures for Najib’s house arrest would cover matters including visits, security, and monitoring of his movements after the official letter had been received.

Najib, 73, was granted a conditional pardon by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, on Friday, allowing him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence in the SRC International case under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to payment of his RM50 million fine and other conditions.

The Agong presides over meetings of the Federal Territories Pardons Board, which comprises the attorney-general, the federal territories minister, and three members appointed by him.

The legal affairs division of the Prime Minister’s Department said Najib must comply with all the conditions imposed, failing which the conditional pardon would be revoked. It did not provide details of the conditions.

Najib was imprisoned in August 2022 after the Federal Court upheld his conviction for abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering involving RM42 million belonging to SRC International, a former subsidiary of 1MDB.

He had been serving a reduced six-year prison sentence at Kajang prison after the FTPB halved his original 12-year sentence in February 2024. The initial RM210 million fine was also reduced to RM50 million.
