George Russell could take another engine penalty at next month’s Las Vegas Grand Prix, by which time Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli may have already clinched the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship title by then.

Russell is currently second in the standings, 102 points behind Antonelli with six rounds left. He started Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix from nineteenth place after exceeding his season’s allowance of power units.

A power unit failure in the previous round forced Mercedes to use an additional unit, despite the team hoping to avoid a penalty in Singapore, a circuit where overtaking is particularly difficult due to it being a street circuit.

“It’ll probably be later in the season now, ‌to be honest. Maybe looking at Vegas, after finishing ninth at Marina Bay. Now we’ve got the choice to take it when we wish, and we’ll be choosing a slightly easier track than ‌this one,” Russell told Sky Sports.

Russell had previously indicated that another penalty was likely before the 2026 campaign ended.

Austin, scheduled for October 25, had been Mercedes’ preferred venue to take it.

Antonelli, 20, could become Formula 1’s youngest-ever world champion in Austin. To secure the title with five rounds still to run, he would need to win the race and have Russell and Lewis Hamilton fail to score enough points to remain in contention.

Hamilton currently stands in third, 111 points behind Antonelli, with 125 points available after Austin. A win for Antonelli in Texas would also eliminate Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and reigning champion Lando Norris from the title fight.
