Oburu Odinga Assures Supporters Of Good Health Amid Speculations

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader and Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga has confirmed he is currently in the United Kingdom undergoing a routine medical check-up following recommendations from his doctors and party leadership.

In a statement issued on Thursday, September 10, Oburu explained that the trip offers a dual opportunity for a comprehensive health evaluation and a necessary period of rest. Describing the assessment as a routine precaution aligned with his advancing age, he characterized his temporary hiatus as a strategic test of the party’s institutional strength.

To ensure continuous operations, Oburu announced that Deputy Party Leaders Simba Arati and Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, alongside the National Central Committee and the party secretariat, will manage day-to-day party affairs during his absence. He urged ODM members to remain united and focused on their shared national objectives.

The UK trip follows a brief hospitalization at Nairobi Hospital on September 1, which triggered public concern. Oburu quickly addressed those rumors at the time, clarifying that he had only undergone a general check-up before returning home, emphasizing his commitment to transparency regarding his health.

Oburu assumed leadership of ODM following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in October 2025. His medical leave comes as the party continues internal deliberations regarding its political direction and ongoing working relationship with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ahead of the 2027 General Election.
