The Hello Kitty Renaissance Is Here, With Sanrio’s Other Stars Leading The Way

The world of Hello Kitty appears to be on the cusp of a new era, with the announcement that one of Sanrio’s other iconic characters will be starring in an upcoming project. With one of Hello Kitty’s friends now confirmed to get their own time in the spotlight, this raises the question: could this just be the beginning of more Sanrio characters stepping into the limelight, and if so, who’s next?

Sanrio, in partnership with IDW Publishing, has officially announced that Hello Kitty’s cutest pup will be getting his own one-shot this December in Hello Kitty: Cinnamoroll #1. This oversized, 40-page special features three stories from writer Sina Grace and artist Megan Homeier, writer/artist Sarah Graley, and writer Caleb Goellner and artist Eggbug. Releasing on December 2, 2026, the one-shot will be available for $5.99.

While Cinnamoroll debuted nearly 30 years after Hello Kitty in 2001, the adorable pup has become one of the most beloved characters among Sanrio’s cast, even rivaling Hello Kitty’s popularity. The character has won first place multiple times in the global Sanrio Character Ranking polls, further cementing his status as a fan favorite.

Defined by his iconic white floppy ears, bright blue eyes, and pink cheeks, Cinnamoroll is the epitome of adorable, so it’s no surprise that he’s captured the hearts of fans. This makes it all the more exciting that he’ll be starring in a new Hello Kitty project this winter.

What Fans Can Expect From Cinnamoroll's Next Adventure

While we are still three long months away from the release of Hello Kitty: Cinnamoroll #1, IDW Publishing has provided an early solicitation, which includes a sneak peek at the official cover art for the one-shot, as well as the official synopsis for the issue, which fans can find below:

Who’s that up in the sky? It’s a cutie, it’s a puppy... It’s Cinnamoroll™!

Enjoy three darling stories from the comics world’s most joyous voices, celebrating everyone’s favorite Cinnamoroll! Follow this shy pup as he finds the perfect soup recipe to bring his sick friend back to health. See how he handles a rival bakery filled with chaotic pranks by the mischievous Lloromannic™! You can even see how Cinnamoroll balances having so many sweet friends!

Sounds delightful, huh?

Based on this synopsis, it’s clear that this one-shot will be nothing short of a delightful read, especially with the all-star roster of creators bringing the pup to life on the pages of the comic. The fact that Cinnamoroll is getting his own one-shot also signals that there may be exciting times on the horizon for other Hello Kitty favorites as well.

Which Sanrio Character Deserves The Spotlight Next?

With IDW Publishing putting the spotlight on a character other than Hello Kitty, it is highly possible that the Cinnamoroll one-shot is just the beginning of what could be a slew of other one-shots starring Hello Kitty’s other friends. This means that Sanrio’s other characters may be on the verge of claiming their due spotlight, something that many fans would undoubtedly appreciate.

Of course, this has not been confirmed yet, and future one-shots starring other characters may depend on the success of the Cinnamoroll special. But if IDW Publishing does decide to move forward with more one-shots, this truly could be the beginning of a new Hello Kitty renaissance, one that is defined by the franchise’s other iconic characters leading the charge.

Considering that Pompompurin won Sanrio’s 2025 Character Ranking poll with over 5.5 million votes, it feels like the golden pooch should be the next Sanrio character to earn a one-shot if IDW Publishing decides to spotlight another character. Pochacco, who claimed third place behind Cinnamoroll, would also be another character that fans would undoubtedly love to see get his own special. So, if you had to decide, which Hello Kitty friend would you like to see next?
