William Nylander scored twice Saturday night at Rogers Place and hit a number that very few Toronto Maple Leafs have ever reached — 300 career goals. He got there with a power-play strike and an empty-netter as Toronto dismantled the Edmonton Oilers 7-2, their fourth straight win this season. The milestone puts Nylander in elite company in Maple Leafs franchise history. Eight goals already in 2026-27, and he is tracking toward a fourth 40-goal season. For a player who has spent his entire NHL career in Toronto, Saturday night was a long time coming.

William Nylander's 300th Goal Puts Him Among Toronto's All-Time Greats

Scoring 300 goals for one franchise means something. It means you stayed, you produced, and you didn't disappear when it got hard. Nylander has done all three.

His first goal of the night came on the power play. The second landed in an empty net, sealing a result that was never really in doubt. But the 300th career goal was the number that stood out. Only a select group of players in the long history of the Toronto Maple Leafs have reached that mark while wearing the blue and white, and Nylander now belongs in that conversation.

He was drafted eighth overall by Toronto in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft and has played every regular-season game of his NHL career as a Maple Leaf. That kind of loyalty is not exactly common in today's league. In 763 regular-season appearances, Nylander has racked up 709 points alongside those 300 goals. He has also been solid in the playoffs, posting 26 goals and 58 points in 62 postseason games.

Nylander's 16 points so far this season is also worth noting. He is not just scoring; he is driving play consistently, and his presence on the power play gives Toronto a genuine edge.

What This Season Means for the Maple Leafs

The bigger picture around this Toronto team goes beyond milestones. The Maple Leafs are playing for something real this season.

Captain Auston Matthews is under contract for two more seasons after this one, but the pressure to win looms over everything the franchise does. If Toronto wants to convince Matthews to commit to another long-term extension when he becomes eligible in the summer of 2027, they need to show him this organisation can actually win when it counts. Four consecutive victories, including a dominant road win in Edmonton of all places, is exactly the kind of statement the team needed to make.

Rogers Place has traditionally been a tough building for visitors. The Oilers, built around Connor McDavid, carry a certain aura on home ice. Toronto did not seem particularly bothered by any of that on Saturday. A 7-2 final score tends to make a point without needing much explanation.

Nylander hitting 300 goals in the middle of a winning streak is one of those moments that can shift the mood around a franchise. This is a player who has been quietly excellent for nearly a decade, often overshadowed by the bigger names around him. Right now, he is one of the reasons Toronto looks like a legitimate playoff threat.
