Vaibhav Sooryavanshi became the youngest Indian to win a gold medal at the Asian Games after the Indian men’s cricket team beat Pakistan in the final at the Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin on Saturday.
The opening batter, 15, took over the mantle from Indian shooter Saurabh Choudhary, who won gold in the men’s 10m air pistol event at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta at 16 years, three months and nine days old
Sooryavanshi also became the second-youngest Indian medallist at the Games at 15 years, six months and seven days. Sanjana Bathula was 15 years, three months and 11 days old when she won bronze in the women’s speed skating 3000m relay event at Hangzhou in 2023.
Squash prodigy Anahat Singh is currently the third-youngest medallist. She won bronze in the women’s team event in 2023 aged 15 years, six months and 16 days old.
Sooryavanshi scored a nine-ball 15 as India posted a daunting 211/6 in 20 overs in the final. Pakistan fell short by 19 runs.
