Jakarta (ANTARA) - A 5.9-magnitude earthquake jolted Jakarta's Kepulauan Seribu region early Saturday, with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirming no tsunami potential.

The agency stated on its official website that the quake occurred at 4:23 a.m. local time.

"No tsunami threat," BMKG said regarding the tremor.

The epicenter was located approximately 69 kilometers northeast of Kepulauan Seribu at a depth of 376 kilometers.

BMKG explained that the earthquake resulted from intraslab activity within tectonic plates.

The tremor was felt at IV MMI in large areas of Pandeglang, Lebak, and Serang districts in Banten; Cianjur District in West Java; and Tanggamus District in Lampung, the agency noted.

Residents in Tangerang, Banten; Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta; and Cilacap, Central Java, also felt lighter tremors at III MMI.

As of 5:00 a.m. local time, no aftershocks were recorded, BMKG added.

BMKG advised residents to stay clear of damaged structures and remain calm while the agency continues monitoring the situation.
