FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets won't have their top offensive player Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, as wide receiver Garrett Wilson was ruled out Friday with a concussion.
The timing is terrible for the Jets (2-6), mired in their second three-game losing streak of the season.
Wilson's absence will mean a bigger role for rookie Omar Cooper Jr., who didn't have a single target last week after consecutive 100-yard receiving games. Adonai Mitchell, coming off a career-high 142 yards, will become the No. 1 wide receiver.
"You can't replace Garrett Wilson, he's a unique player," offensive coordinator Frank Reich said. "On the other hand, we're not afraid. Did you see the game AD had? Did you see the games Coop has had? We have a lot of confidence in our guys.
"They're different players, so maybe you do slightly different things. If Garrett's up, then we'll do Garret things. If he's not up, then we'll do AD things or Coop things or whatever the case may be. You have to try to play to your player's strengths."
Wilson absorbed a blow to the head by safety Jeremy Chinn on the next-to-last play of last week's 38-33 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. He remained in the game and seemed fine afterward, but reported symptoms on Monday, according to coach Aaron Glenn.
On Wednesday, the team announced that he was in the concussion protocol. Wilson leads the team with 43 receptions for 527 yards and three touchdowns.
It's not all bad news for the Jets. On Thursday, running back Breece Hall -- sideline five games with a quadriceps injury -- said he's ready to go after being listed as questionable for the last two games.
Backup Braelon Allen emerged in Hall's absence, rushing for 504 yards over the five games. The coaches have said that Hall remains the No. 1 back, though they haven't said how they plan to divide the workload. Reich said it will be "a mixture."
Glenn said the media will try to "spin it into a negative situation." As for the distribution of carries, all he said was, "Both guys will play."
