Indonesia urges greater developing-country role in global governance

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto urged developing countries to seek a greater role in shaping global governance, saying their interests could suffer if they remain excluded from international rule-making.

Accompanying President Prabowo Subianto at the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India, on Saturday, Airlangga warned that limited participation in international regulatory negotiations could leave developing nations subject to decisions made without them.

Indonesia will continue working to build a more inclusive, representative and equitable global governance system, Airlangga said in a statement cited here on Sunday.

He said the changing geopolitical landscape made it increasingly important for developing countries to strengthen their voices in international negotiations and decision-making.

Indonesia is committed to advocating reforms in multilateral institutions to make them more responsive to and representative of developing countries, he said.

The government is seeking reforms at the United Nations, World Trade Organization and international financial institutions, he added.

Airlangga also highlighted the need to reform multilateral economic systems amid growing economic fragmentation, trade uncertainty and disruptions to global supply chains.

He said Indonesia would promote an open, inclusive, transparent and rules-based multilateral trading system while supporting conditions that enable developing countries to advance.

His remarks reflected the theme of Saturday's session, “Inclusive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateralism.”

During the session for BRICS members, Prabowo stressed the importance of strengthening resilience at national, regional and global levels while highlighting the bloc's collective economic strength.

Prabowo said BRICS represents about half of humanity and encompasses major markets, energy producers and significant shares of the global economy and trade.

On its second day, the summit will continue talks between BRICS members and partner countries under the theme “Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth.”
