DWTS’ Derek Hough Calls Tyler Cameron the Wrong Name On-Air

Dancing With the Stars' Emma Slater Reacts to Judges' "Stingy” Scores on Premiere Episode

Derek Hough needs to walk back a minor misstep.

While the Dancing With the Stars judge was delivering feedback to The Bachelorette alum Tyler Cameron and his pro partner Sharna Burgess, he accidentally called the star by the wrong name.

“Dylan, you have this Patrick Swayze aura about you,” Hough told Cameron during the Sept. 15 premiere following his and Burgess’ performance. “You’re cool, masculine, just effortless. For me, the frame, aw mate, we got to expand it. Marrying your presence with the technique, the frame, the posture, you’re going to be fantastic.”

There’s no "Dylan" on the DWTS cast this year, though Hough might have had his mind on season 34 contestant Dylan Efron, who made it all the way to the finale where he placed fourth alongside his pro partner Daniella Karagach.

Nevertheless, Cameron appeared to let the slip up slide—and it made for some fun reactions among DWTS fans online.

As one wrote on X shortly after Hough’s comments aired alongside a gif of someone laughing, “Bro Derek thinks Tyler Cameron is Dylan Efron from last year.”

Meanwhile another joked, “Dylan Efron lives on through Tyler Cameron apparently,” while a different user quipped, in reference to the show’s voting system, "Text Dylan to 21523 I guess.”

Of course, Hough—and fellow judges Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli—will have no choice but to say Cameron’s actual name several times over, as he and Burgess shut the house down with their tango to Lenny Kravitz’s “Are You Gonna Go My Way.”

As Tonioli noted, Cameron has “a natural musicality.”

Inaba, for her part, added she was “beyond impressed” by Cameron and Burgess’ performance.

“That was amazing,” she added. “You have a commanding performance, lean into it.”

For Cameron, the positive feedback is the fruits of his intense labor ahead of premiere night—though the 33-year-old wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I mean, to get to be in this room, do this dance, do all these things, have an amazing partner like this,” Cameron mused to People in an interview published Sept. 5. “It’s an incredible journey that you’re going to look back on forever.”

It’s a bonus that Cameron’s fianceé Tate Madden—to whom he got engaged last month—is also a huge fan.

“This was her dream as a little kid, too,” he added. “So to be here, she’s just eating this up.”

I made myself a bowl of pasta and a glass of red wine and I redid my vision board for the year. Dancing With the Stars was already on it from the year before. However, I added five more Dancing With the Stars on the board."
