Former Tabung Haji chairman, ex-Treasury sec-gen released from MACC custody in RCI-linked probe

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 1 — A former Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) chairman and a former Treasury secretary-general were reportedly released from Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) custody today in an investigation linked to a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) report on the pilgrims’ fund.

Harian Metro reported that the two men were released this morning after being remanded on August 27.

A source reportedly said investigators had completed recording statements from the two men, who are in their 60s and carry the honorifics “Datuk Seri” and “Tan Sri”.

The politician and former TH chairman and the former Finance Ministry official were arrested at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya on August 26.

The case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009 for using one’s office or position to solicit gratification.

A former TH chief executive officer was previously detained and remanded in connection with the same investigation.

Before that, MACC detained seven people comprising a shipping company chief executive officer, two company directors and four former members of TH’s senior management.

The cases involved separate allegations concerning documents containing false information, a proposed investment in a construction company and a hotel lease in Saudi Arabia.

The 252-page RCI report, which examined TH’s management and operations from 2014 to 2020, was declassified and released on July 29, four years after it was completed.

Among its recommendations were amendments to the Tabung Haji Act 1995 to bar active politicians from serving as directors of TH and its subsidiaries, as well as expertise requirements for board members.
