Jawi introduces multi-tier graves to optimise cemetery space [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) has introduced tiered burials at the Raudhatul Sakinah Islamic Cemetery in Kepong to optimise limited burial space.
The pilot project is being implemented by the department's Mosque Management Division in collaboration with the Dakwah Management Division and the Kuala Lumpur Public Works Department (PWD), specifically for unclaimed bodies.
Jawi said the initiative also introduces a pulley machine developed by Kuala Lumpur PWD to lower bodies to a depth of eight feet.
"In addition, to ensure structural safety, trench boxes are used to prevent soil collapse during the tiered burial process," Jawi said in a statement.
The department hopes the equipment will improve burial efficiency and assist ground personnel.
"Efforts to improve and upgrade the operations of Islamic cemeteries, including exploring suitable technologies and equipment, aim to ensure Jawi's services are delivered effectively.
"This effort also reflects the department's commitment to ensuring funeral management is carried out responsibly, orderly and respectfully in accordance with Islamic requirements," it said.
