Two attendees die at Burning Man 2026

Burning Man’s final days took an unexpected turn this year, as organizers confirmed a difficult development in Black Rock City, Nevada.

The first attendee, an unidentified man in his mid-50s, died on 4 September after experiencing a medical emergency.

The second, identified as 60-year-old Craigh Mann, was found deceased in his camp by campmates on 5 September.

Burning Man Project confirmed the first death in an official statement.

They said the participant experienced a medical emergency and immediately received lifesaving measures.

He was then transported to the onsite emergency care centre, where he was pronounced dead.

His identity has not been released publicly, pending family notification.

The second attendee, Craigh Mann, was found unresponsive in his camp at approximately 3pm on Saturday, 5 September.

Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen said there did not appear to be any external signs of foul play in either death, though the causes of death remain undetermined.

Burning Man Project offered its condolences in a statement: “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the participant’s family, friends, campmates, and all those affected by this loss.”

The organisation has also made around-the-clock peer and crisis-support resources available to attendees affected by the deaths.

These two deaths bring the total to five in Black Rock City since Burning Man returned from its pandemic-era hiatus.

Last year’s edition saw the death of Vadim Kruglov, the festival’s first suspected homicide, a case that remains unresolved.

This year’s event also saw other incidents. A 30-year-old man was seriously injured after falling roughly two levels from a 55-foot structure at the Square One camp.

Heavy rain also temporarily shut the festival’s entrance and exit, while dust storms disrupted the gathering throughout the week.

Burning Man 2026, the festival’s 40th edition, began on 30 August and concluded on 7 September, reportedly drawing around 70,000 attendees.
