JOHOR BAHRU, Oct 14 — The Johor Road Transport Department (JPJ) will meet p-hailing operators to discuss measures to raise riders’ awareness of road safety and curb repeat traffic offences, particularly running red lights.

State JPJ director Zulkarnain Yasin said the department had received numerous complaints about traffic offences involving p-hailing riders, particularly running red lights, captured in dashboard camera footage.

According to him, operators should play a role in developing appropriate mechanisms to raise riders’ awareness, remind them not to repeat offences and prevent accidents.

“Through the meeting, I want to find out whether operators have policies to prevent, restrict or suspend riders from operating,” he said in an interview with Bernama here today.

He said JPJ also imposed demerit points on road users who repeatedly committed offences such as running red lights, in addition to issuing summonses.

Zulkarnain said operators also needed to take proactive measures, adding that responsibility should not rest entirely with the authorities.

“Those who run red lights will be given demerit points. Once they accumulate 20 points, their driving licences will certainly be suspended.

“That is one of the measures we take, but we want to know whether p-hailing operators have their own methods that could help us,” he said.

According to him, road accident records and studies showed that motorcyclists accounted for between 60 and 70 per cent of accidents and fatalities.

He said the department continued to strengthen enforcement, particularly in accident-prone areas, as part of its key performance indicators (KPIs) to reduce road accidents.

JPJ was also obtaining the latest statistics on accidents involving p-hailing riders from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in conjunction with the planned meeting, he added. — Bernama
