Jakarta (ANTARA) -

Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) stated that the construction of temporary housing for earthquake victims in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) is being carried out with due consideration for local geographical conditions and on-the-ground needs.

In a statement received here on Thursday, BNPB Chief Suharyanto said the agency had adopted a flexible, phased approach to the housing program to provide affected residents with immediate access to decent shelter during the transition to disaster recovery.

"The construction of temporary housing is tailored to conditions and needs on the ground while taking into account applicable regulations and technical standards," he said after inspecting a temporary housing project in Ngada District, NTT.

Suharyanto said BNPB is offering two options to residents whose homes were severely damaged: cash assistance for rental accommodation or temporary housing while they wait for their homes to be rebuilt.

"Temporary housing units are being built in stages. Those already completed can be occupied immediately, while construction of the remaining units is being accelerated," he said.

Indonesian authorities have launched temporary housing projects in several districts affected by the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck Flores Island in mid-August 2026.

As of Sept. 28, the government had completed four temporary housing units in Manggarai District. Construction of another 50 units had exceeded the 50-percent completion mark, while 60 others remained below 50 percent complete.

In East Manggarai District, six temporary housing units had been completed, while work on another 561 units was underway under the first phase, which targets a total of 1,305 units.

Meanwhile, 11 temporary housing units had been built in Ngada District, with construction continuing on another 272 units.

In Nagekeo District, nine temporary housing units had been completed, and another 173 were under construction out of 314 homes verified as severely damaged.

Sikka District had recorded two completed units, with another 25 under construction. In Ende District, seven units had been completed, and another seven were being built.

In West Manggarai District, construction is pending the issuance of a decree identifying eligible beneficiaries after affected residents opted to switch from cash assistance to temporary housing support.
