Student dies from ‘heat stroke’ during Agusan intramurals
SAN FRANCISCO, Agusan del Sur — A Grade 10 student died during school intramural activities in Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte, allegedly due to heat stroke.
In an interview, Vilma Bag-ao said her son, Yusho Steve Bag-ao, a student at Mindanao Institute, was rushed to Cabadbaran District Hospital and declared dead around 4 p.m. on Aug. 26.
Bag-ao said doctors told the family that Yusho had suffered a heat stroke.

She later said his cause of death was ventricular tachyarrhythmia, or an abnormally rapid heart rhythm originating in the heart’s lower chambers, citing a medical abstract from Cabadbaran District Hospital.

Yusho had a congenital heart condition discovered when he was an infant, Bag-ao said. Doctors had previously recommended surgery but told the family it was not urgent.
His death occurred two weeks after extreme heat prompted Cabadbaran City Mayor Judy Chin Amante to suspend face-to-face classes in public schools on Aug. 12. Heat indices across parts of Caraga at the time ranged from 42 to 46 degrees Celsius.
Mindanao Institute also suspended classes because of the heat and advised students to stay hydrated and avoid unsafe heat exposure. The school later scheduled its Intramurals Meet and Buwan ng Wika activities for Aug. 24 to 28.

Bag-ao questioned the timing of the parental consent for her son’s participation in the intramurals.
She said Yusho’s father signed the consent form only after the students had already participated in a parade.

Bag-ao noted that the family has yet to receive a clear account of what happened after Yusho became ill, including whether CPR was performed before he was taken to the hospital.
The mother said she wants a clear explanation of what happened during her son’s final hours and whether adequate precautions were taken during the school activity. /mcm
