Pilandok to bring more rain as it enhances southwest monsoon

MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Depression Pilandok is expected to strengthen the southwest monsoon, although it is not forecast to make landfall, the state weather bureau said Sunday.

In its 5 p.m. weather forecast, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Luzon and western portions of Visayas would continue to experience rains due to the monsoon.

“While this will be far [from the landmass], I repeat that this will enhance the southwest monsoon, which is why we will still experience heavy rains and gusts of wind in a large portion of the country. Heavy rains are forecast over Luzon and some portions, particularly western portions of Visayas,” Pagasa weather specialist Daniel Villamil said.

Villamil added that monsoon rains were forecast over Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, some parts of Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon), and Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan).

Pilandok was 1,180 kilometers east of Extreme Northern Luzon as of 4 p.m. It was carrying maximum winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 55 kph.

Villamil said Pilandok would generally move northwestward from Sunday until Tuesday. Its track is far from the Philippine landmass, and it is expected to weaken into a low-pressure area by Tuesday.

Villamil said monsoon rains would still prevail over the western sections of Northern and Central Luzon on Monday, particularly in Ilocos Region, Zambales, Bataan, Abra, and Benguet.

Occasional rains would also continue over the western sections of Southern Luzon, Metro Manila, and Occidental Mindoro.

Meanwhile, weather conditions were expected to generally improve over Western Visayas, while the rest of Visayas and Mindanao would see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with chances of isolated rain showers.
