Floods affect 23 barangays in Calapan; 739 residents evacuated

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — Flooding was reported in 23 barangays in this city as rains associated with the southwest monsoon (habagat) continued to affect Oriental Mindoro on Wednesday, (Aug. 19, according to the Calapan City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC).
As of 6 a.m., the city’s situational report said 111 families or 376 individuals have taken shelter inside evacuation centers, while another 105 families or 363 individuals had evacuated outside designated centers.
No untoward incident was reported as of the latest update.

The city remained under a Yellow Rainfall Warning due to monsoon-related rains.
Several rivers were also being closely monitored. The Bucayao River was at critical level but its waters have been decreasing, while the Panggalaan and Longos rivers were above normal level and also decreasing. The Patas River was above normal level and and waters there were increasing.
Despite the flooding, several major roads remained passable to all motorists, including Bucayao Road, Panggalaan Road and Layugan Road in Canubing II.
However, the CDRRMC said Gutad Road, Navotas, Persons-Sitio Islander 2, and the Barangay Parang-Sitio Abaton road were not passable to light vehicles.

The Calapan Port also continued to list scheduled trips, including Montenegro vessels at 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m., 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.; Starlite at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and FastCat at noon and 9 p.m.
The city’s Emergency Operations Center remained at Blue Alert, indicating continued monitoring and preparedness amid the prevailing weather conditions.

Oriental Mindoro has experienced recurring flooding during periods of persistent habagat rains. Earlier this month, the provincial disaster office reported flooding in several municipalities, including Calapan, as monsoon rains affected the province.
