Team USA is on the hunt for its fifth consecutive gold medal at the World Cup

The quarterfinals of the 2026 FIBA Women's World Cup were drama-free, as Team USA, France, Germany, and Spain advanced with double-digit victories on Thursday in Berlin. Germany's 19-point upset win over Belgium, the reigning EuroBasket champions, was the smallest margin of victory. 

Now, it's on to the semifinals, set for Saturday after an off day on Friday. Team USA, after a blowout of Hungary, will take on Spain in a rematch of the 2014 gold medal game, while France will face Germany, which has advanced to the semifinals for the first time ever. This is the sixth consecutive World Cup in which the host country has reached at least the semifinals. 

Team USA is on the hunt for a fifth consecutive gold medal at the World Cup, which would tie the Soviet Union's record for the most consecutive golds -- the Soviets won five in a row from 1959-75 -- in the competition's history, dating back to 1953.

Women's World Cup bracket

On one side of the bracket, Team USA will face Spain, while on the other side, France will face Germany. Both Team USA and France are big favorites and remain on course for a showdown in the final, which would be a rematch of the gold medal game from the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Team USA won that game two summers ago by just a single point.

Team USA remains the clear favorite as it was heading into the tournament, though its odds to win gold have shrunk slightly from -380 to -360. On the flip side, France, the biggest threat to Team USA, has moved from +700 prior to the tournament to +440 thanks to its dominant showing thus far with four wins by an average of 39 points. 

Player to watch from each team

🇺🇸 United States

You could choose just about anyone on the roster, but we'll go with Breanna Stewart for Saturday's matchup against Spain. Stewart hasn't put up huge numbers in this tournament, but she's been one of the most reliable American players on both sides of the ball and will be called upon against Spain's frontcourt, led by Awa Fam, the No. 3 pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft. In particular, Stewart's effort on the glass will be worth watching. Spain is averaging 14 offensive rebounds per game in the tournament, second only to Team USA. Stewart, who leads Team USA in rebounding at seven per game, will have her hands full defensively and will have to control the boards.

🇫🇷 France

Gabby Williams led France to a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympics, a silver medal at EuroBasket Women 2021 and a silver medal at the 2024 Olympics. If she keeps playing like she has, perhaps this will be the year she finally brings France a gold. Williams didn't have her best shooting performance against China in the quarterfinals, but still put up 14 points and seven rebounds to continue a strong tournament. Her 17.5 points per game are fourth among all players, and she also leads France in steals (2.5) and is second in rebounds (5.3). 

🇪🇸 Spain

Spain's new generation has been on full display in Berlin, and no one has shone brighter than Iyana Martín, the No. 7 pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft. While she remained in Europe this season, her play over the past week has made it clear why the Portland Fire see her as a big part of their future. The 20-year-old is averaging 16.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and two steals per game. She's tied for seventh in the tournament in scoring and leads Spain in scoring and assists. 

🇩🇪 Germany

The host country reached the semifinals of the World Cup for the first time ever with a major upset win over Belgium, thanks in large part to a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double from star forward Leonie Fiebich. While Fiebich had been excellent as a rebounder and facilitator entering the semis, she was averaging just 8.3 points on 25% shooting in Germany's first four games. Against Belgium, she finally led the way in the scoring department. If Germany wants this magical run to continue, they'll need another big game from Fiebich against France.
