MANILA, Philippines — Eighteen teachers, school leaders and support staff were honored on Friday for doing their jobs with integrity. Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara told them that hard work and discipline matter most “when no one is watching.”

“Ang sipag at disiplina ay hindi lamang mga salitang magandang ilagay sa isang programa o sa isang plaque. They are values we must live by, especially when the work is difficult, when the recognition is absent, and when no one is watching,” Angara said at the 14th Ambassador Cabangon Chua Gintong Parangal para sa Edukasyon awards.

“Thank you for reminding us that service is not always loud or visible,” Angara told the awardees.

“We can spend hours discussing a policy without asking the most important question: How will this make life better for the people we serve? Kaya sa tuwing pinag-uusapan natin ang edukasyon, mahalagang makita natin ang mga numero, pero kailangan din nating makita ang kuwento sa likod ng mga ito,” he added.

Angara also highlighted the critical role of compassionate communication within the educational community. Referring to recent safety challenges faced by school communities, he underscored the healing power of unity and encouragement.

“Sa ating mga guro, a word of encouragement can help a learner believe in themselves. Sa ating mga school heads and education leaders, a sincere “Thank you for your hard work’ can remind a tired teacher that their efforts are seen. At the end of the day, our work is ultimately about people,” Angara said.

The honorees are eight teachers, five school and division leaders, and five members of the administrative staff who keep schools running.

They come from across the country, from Cagayan in the north to Kidapawan in Mindanao, and were chosen after screening at the division and regional level by a panel of DepEd officials, program partners, and retired educators.

The awards are organized by Fortune Life Insurance Company and MaryLindbert International with DepEd, in honor of the late Ambassador Antonio L. Cabangon Chua. They close the school year’s Value of Hard Work and Discipline program, which has promoted good values and reading comprehension among elementary school learners, and financial literacy and continuous professional development among teachers since 2011.
