Manchester United: When JJ Gabriel can make Champions League debut after squad decision

Translate

Gabriel played the full 90 minutes at the Progress With Unity Stadium on Thursday afternoon, opening his account on the stroke of half-time before completing his treble with two goals in quick succession late on.

However, the teenager was not eligible to play for Man Utd in the Premier League last season as competition rules state players in matchday squads cannot be from a lower age group than the Under-16’s.

Gabriel could have featured in the FA Cup, but United were knocked out by Brighton in the third round.

Therefore, the wait for Gabriel - who turns 16 in October - to make his bow in the Premier League for Man United is now over as he is eligible to be selected by head coach Michael Carrick at any time.

That said, a potential Champions League debut may have to wait until 2027 at the earliest. This is because the only way for a 15-year-old to play in the Champions League is to be named in a club's 25-man A list of players.

United have submitted their squad but opted not to put Gabriel on the A list, meaning he will not feature against Sabah FK on Thursday.

As per Uefa rules, clubs that qualify for the knockout stages can register up to three new players in February, thus opening the door for Gabriel to be included in the A list if United secure a top 24 finish in the league phase.

There is the scenario where an exceptional circumstances could see Gabriel replace one of the United players on List A as Uefa state: "A replacement of an outfield player registered on List A is permitted in the case of a long-term injury or illness lasting at least 60 days.

“During the league phase, up to and including Matchday 6, a club may temporarily replace a maximum of one outfield player and register a new outfield player, provided that player was already registered with the club before the List A deadline of 2 September 2026.

“The locally trained players quota must continue to be respected. If the injured or ill player recovers before the end of the 60-day period, that player remains ineligible to participate in UEFA club competitions until the end of the period."
