Rulani Mokwena wins award after just 58 days in Egypt

Rulani Mokwena received the award from the Egyptian Professional Footballers Association (EPFA), just 58 days after his appointment.

Mokwena has guided Pyramids to six wins from six competitive matches, scoring 14 goals and conceding just once across their domestic and continental campaigns.

RULANI MOKWENA STARTS WITH SIX WINS

Pyramids have been perfect in the Egyptian Premier League, winning all four of their opening matches without conceding a goal.

Mokwena’s side started with a 3-0 away victory over Ghazl El Mahalla before beating Abou Qir Fertilizers 2-0. They then secured a narrow 1-0 win away to Al Masry before recording another 1-0 victory over El Gouna.

That perfect run has placed Pyramids at the top of the table, with Mokwena’s tactical approach already producing results in his first league campaign in Egypt.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach has also made an impact in the CAF Champions League.

Pyramids defeated Kenyan giants Gor Mahia 2-0 away from home before completing a 7-1 aggregate victory with a 5-1 demolition in Cairo. The result secured their progression to the next qualifying round.

TRACK RECORD BEYOND SOUTH AFRICAN BOARDERS

Mokwena’s latest achievement adds to an increasingly international coaching career that began to expand after his successful years in South Africa.

He accumulated 16 trophies during his time in South African football and enjoyed his most prominent spell with Mamelodi Sundowns. His achievements with the Brazilians culminated in him being named PSL Coach of the Season for the 2023/24 campaign.

Mokwena subsequently took his career to Morocco, where he was appointed by Wydad AC. The coach guided the Casablanca giants through a transitional campaign before leaving the club, with Wydad eventually securing a podium finish in the Botola Pro League.

His next move took him to Algeria and MC Alger, where he won the Algerian Super Cup and left the club sitting five points clear at the top of the league with matches in hand.

After a short spell with Libyan club Al Ittihad, Mokwena has now landed in Egypt.

His early results with Pyramids have already brought individual recognition, while the club’s perfect start has put them firmly at the top of the domestic standings and through to the next stage of the CAF Champions League.
