D. Gukesh and Javokhir Sindarov will not face each other when India takes on Uzbekistan in the Open Section on Day 6 of the Chess Olympiad 2026, despite both being named in their teams for the marquee encounter.
The Round 6 pairings have placed Sindarov on Board 2 for Uzbekistan, while Gukesh will play on Board 4 for India, ruling out a direct clash between the two World Championship contenders.
Gukesh and Sindarov are set to meet later this year for the World Championship title in Geneva, Switzerland, with their match scheduled to begin on November 24. Their Chess Olympiad meeting, however, will have to wait.
India enters the crucial encounter unbeaten and sits second in the Open Section standings, with Uzbekistan leading the table. The contest represents India’s toughest test so far, with Gukesh and R. Praggnanandhaa among the key players expected to contribute.
Sindarov, meanwhile, has enjoyed a strong run of form heading into the Olympiad and will spearhead Uzbekistan’s challenge on the second board.
