Prabowo orders permit revocation for firms linked to forest fires

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has ordered authorities to revoke business permits of corporations suspected of ordering forest and land fires, warning that no company would be exempt.

"Any corporation, whoever they are, if there is even the slightest indication they ordered the burning, we will revoke their licenses. We will revoke all of the corporation’s permits. I am not playing around," Prabowo said while leading a coordination meeting on forest and land fire management in Pekanbaru, Riau, on Monday.

Prabowo also called on authorities to prevent individuals from deliberately setting fires for any reason. He said public education should be strengthened, particularly in villages, so that communities understand that land burning is prohibited.

People needing to clear land should seek government assistance rather than burn it, he said, adding that local governments, Indonesian Military (TNI), and the National Police (Polri) could help organise clearing through farmer groups.

Land-clearing assistance can be organised through farmer groups, with financial support provided through programmes, such as the People’s Business Credit (KUR) and cooperatives.

"If they need to clear land, they should report it to the sub-district head or regent, and the government will help them. TNI and Polri will help, local governments will help the people, and they will be organised into farmer groups. The funding can then come through KUR or cooperatives," he noted.

According to data from the Ministry of Forestry monitoring system, there were 2,894 hotspots recorded across 10 provinces in Sumatra, with the highest concentrations in South Sumatra at 1,410 hotspots, followed by Riau with 480 and Jambi with 425.

The total area burned across the 10 provinces reached 36,047.64 hectares in 2026, according to the data.

Prabowo has also inspected several areas in Kalimantan in recent days to ensure that forest and land fire management was being carried out swiftly, in an integrated manner, and effectively.
