An AI Agent Reportedly Deleted Entire Season of Swedish Version of ‘The Challenge’
“The big problem is that their backup didn’t work and that means they have to recut everything from scratch,” the program director said, downplaying AI’s role in the deletion
Talk about meeting The Challenge — the latest challenge to the Swedish version of the popular reality TV show has met its match by way of an apparent AI agent, which is being blamed for deleting its entire new season.
According to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet via Futurism, an AI agent deleted the new season of the show known as The Challenge Sverige, mere weeks before its premiere. Apparently, the files are irrecoverable and the production company, Mastiff, must go back to the drawing board and recut the entire season again.
The incident supposedly happened after an AI agent was granted access on the server from Mastiff. It apparently wiped a year’s worth of work and now its original Nov. 22 air time has been pushed back to next year, according to TV4, which airs the show.
TV4 called it a “technical breakdown” and said it was unaware whether an AI agent played a role on its deletion. TV4’s Program Director Mia Lindqvist disputed it was an AI agent, saying in a statement that it wasn’t an “AI agent that acted independently.
“On the other hand, most production companies use AI in their work processes these days, but that’s a completely different matter,” she continued. “In this case, the big problem is that their backup didn’t work and that means they have to recut everything from scratch. The raw material exists, so there is no problem, but of course it means that we lose time.”

Lindqvist stressed the deletion was from the “human factor” and “not AI,” per Futurism’s translation.
Regardless of if it was caused by AI or from human error, the failed backup system appeared to leave the show vulnerable alongside giving AI agents access to work processes, which serves as a warning sign for other productions to ensure backups are set.
