Jakarta (ANTARA) - The University of Indonesia's Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA UI) and Russian cybersecurity firm Positive Technologies are exploring cooperation on training in data science, AI and cybersecurity, the faculty said.

Sakuranesia Society, which promotes diplomatic, educational, research and cultural exchanges between Indonesia and Japan and other international partners, facilitated the proposal.

"Cybersecurity and artificial intelligence can no longer be separated. AI models require secure data," Head of the FMIPA UI Data Science Center Alhadi Bustamam said in a statement here Sunday.

Modern security systems increasingly rely on AI to detect threats, he said, creating opportunities for university-industry collaboration. The center wants to contribute "at this intersection."

"Cooperation with international industry partners can expand access for lecturers and students to real-world cases and best practices in cybersecurity," he said.

"We hope this initial engagement will lead to joint research that produces high-quality publications while also providing solutions to digital security challenges in Indonesia," Bustamam added.

Sakuranesia founder Tovic R said the meeting aimed to link Indonesian universities with international partners to build digital talent.

"International collaboration must address Indonesia's real needs. One of our biggest needs today is reliable digital talent in cybersecurity and AI," he said.

Tovic said universities play a key role in preparing talent that can keep pace with technology.

"We are committed to following up on this meeting so that the plans discussed today can soon be translated into concrete programs for students and lecturers," he said.

Sakuranesia aims to develop Indonesian talent, expand ties with Japan, Vietnam and Uzbekistan, and deepen research ties with Russia.

Alexander Udalov, Positive Technologies' director of International Channels and Educational Programs, said the company was ready to share its cybersecurity expertise.

Udalov said demand for cybersecurity professionals is outpacing supply, including in Indonesia, and the firm wants students to learn how attacks work and how to defend against them.
