Northern Metropolis data hub to start phased operations in mid-2027: CLP Power

A planned supercomputing hub at the Northern Metropolis megadevelopment in Hong Kong’s border area will start phased operations earlier than expected in mid-2027, according to electricity supplier CLP Power.

The power supplier added that it had sufficient capacity to support energy demand equivalent to three to four supercomputing centres similar in scale to the Sandy Ridge data facility cluster over the next decade.

“I am delighted to join Range Technology today in announcing our objective to strive for the phased commencement of operations at the Sandy Ridge data centre by mid-2027,” Joseph Law Ka-chun, managing director of CLP Power, said on Wednesday.

“Developing artificial intelligence in Hong Kong relies on computing power as its engine, with electricity serving as the critical source of kinetic energy.”
