Prime Video's New Robocop Reboot Casting Gets Official Response From Joel Kinnaman

Translate

EXCLUSIVE: Joel Kinnaman reacts to Dan Stevens' official Robocop casting.

After Paul Verhoeven's 1987 original film starring Peter Weller became a cult classic and was followed by two sequels, RoboCop returned in 2014, rebooting the franchise with Kinnaman taking on the lead role. The film wasn't a major hit, however, and Amazon MGM Studios is now bringing a TV show to life for Prime Video. It was recently confirmed that Dan Stevens will be the new RoboCop.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan for High Value Target, Kinnaman expresses enthusiasm about Stevens leading the RoboCop TV show. Kinnaman reveals that he's a fan of Noah Hawley's Legion, which Stevens starred in, and he's excited to see how the character evolves with this new lead actor. Check out his comment below:

Oh, I love Dan Stevens. He's such a great actor. I thought that show that he did, Legion, was incredible. So he's perfect. I can't wait to see what he does with it.

Hailing from director José Padilha, 2014's RoboCop took on a more serious tone, abandoning the satirical elements that have helped to make Verhoeven's original so enduring. The film earned mixed reviews and has only a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the Popcornmeter score almost matching at 49%. Made on an estimated budget between $100–130 million, the reboot grossed $242 million worldwide, a disappointing result.

Peter Ocko serves as creator of Prime Video's upcoming RoboCop TV show, on top of being writer, executive producer, and showrunner. The show, which will consist of eight episodes, also sees the return of original movie co-creators Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner as executive producers, and Stevens has teased that the series will return of the 1987 movie's satire. James Wan, Michael Clear, Rob Hackett and Blumhouse Atomic Monster also executive produce.

As with the original and the reboot, the RoboCop TV show is expected to tell the story of police officer Alex Murphy as he is critically injured in the line of duty. A giant tech conglomerate then implants his consciousness into the body of a powerful robot and convinces a city to incorporate this robot into its police force.

So far, Stevens is the only actor confirmed for the RoboCop TV show. The series doesn't yet have a release date, but filming is reportedly scheduled to get underway next spring, suggesting the show could arrive at the end of 2027 or in early 2028.

Though Kinnaman isn't involved in the TV reboot, he has kept busy as an actor in recent years, appearing in projects like The Suicide Squad (2021), Silent Night (2023), For All Mankind, and Imperfect Women. His latest project, High Value Target: The Hunt for Saddam, sees him taking on the role of John Nixon, a CIA agent and the first American to interrogate Saddam Hussein.

Many questions remain about the RoboCop TV show, but Stevens, known for projects like Downton Abbey, The Terror, The Guest, and the recent Onslaught (2026), makes the series one to look forward to. Kinnaman, for his part, certainly seems to think Stevens is a strong choice to take up the mantle of the memorable robotic hero.
