PH has not spelt out details of support for Melaka polls, says Bersatu

Pakatan Harapan has not given any specific instructions on the type of support its machinery will offer Bersatu candidates under their pact for the Melaka state election.

Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz said the party was open to accepting any type of support to boost the chances of its seven candidates, provided their principles are not affected.

However, he said, there had been no specific instructions on the type of support or cooperation PH’s election machinery would offer to Bersatu.

“Bersatu is open to cooperation with any party, as long as our seats aren’t sacrificed. If (PH) can help us win in Bemban, that’s good,” he told FMT during campaigning here today.

Bersatu remains a Perikatan Nasional component but has reached a pact with PH for the Melaka election. Despute this, they will still clash in three seats – Ayer Keroh, Kelebang and Pengkalan Batu.

PH has, nonetheless, made way for its former component in four seats, including Bemban and Sungai Udang, which Bersatu won in 2021 under the PN banner.

Tun Faisal said Bersatu was hoping to add to the number of opposition assemblymen in the Melaka assembly, as this was necessary to ensure stronger checks and balances.

He acknowledged that Barisan Nasional was in a strong position following the 2021 election, when the Umno-led coalition won 21 of the 28 state seats.

This risked sidelining the interests of certain segments of the people, he said.
