‘Hawaii Five-O’ Movie in the Works From ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Director Destin Daniel Cretton

A movie version of the police procedural “Hawaii Five-O” is in the works at Paramount.

Destin Daniel Cretton, whose summer blockbuster “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has remained a box office sensation, has been hired to direct the film from a script by Chris Bremner (“Bad Boys for Life”).

Plot details haven’t been revealed as the project is in early stages of development, according to sources. Deadline Hollywood broke the news of the reboot.

Created by Leonard Freeman, “Hawaii Five-O” launched in 1968 and became the longest-running police drama on American television by the finale in 1980. The series starred Jack Lord as detective captain Steve McGarrett, who investigated organized crime as the head of a fictional elite state police task force on the island. Most episodes ended with the show’s catchphrase “Book ’em, Dano” — which McGarrett would say to his partner, detective Danny Williams (played by James MacArthur) after a suspect was caught.

A reboot called “Hawaii Five-0” (using a zero instead of the original letter “O”) launched on CBS in 2010 and ran for 10 seasons, with the final 240th episode airing in 2020. Alex O’Loughlin, Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park anchored the new series, which put a modern spin on the cop drama. There have been several attempts over the decades to bring a “Hawaii Five-O” movie to the big screen but none came to fruition.

Cretton is best known for his work on Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” The latest Spidey adventure, which opened in late July, has grossed a stunning $924 million domestically and $2.4 billion globally to date. It’s on the verge of becoming the highest-grossing North American release in history (supplanting 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” with $936 million, not adjusted for inflation) and it’s the third-biggest movie worldwide following 2009’s “Avatar” ($2.9 billion) and 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” ($2.79 billion).
