UCL: Fernandes, Carrick clash over tactics after 4-1 loss to Como

Translate

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes and head coach Michael Carrick appeared to disagree over the team’s tactical approach following a humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.

The heavy loss raised fresh questions about Carrick’s future, with the United boss facing scrutiny after a disappointing performance that left the travelling supporters frustrated.

Carrick apologised to the 700 Manchester United fans who made the trip to watch the game. His reaction after the final whistle, when he crossed the pitch and repeatedly raised his hands towards the supporters, also drew attention.

The gesture recalled Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reaction following United’s 4-1 defeat to Watford in November 2021, a result that preceded his dismissal as manager the following day.

However, it was Fernandes’ post-match comments that intensified the focus on the relationship between the United captain and his manager.

Speaking to TNT Sports on Wednesday after the defeat, Fernandes questioned the decision not to press Como aggressively, suggesting that the approach allowed their opponents to grow in confidence and control the game.

“It’s a decision from the staff to not press man to man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, but sometimes when you give too much the ball to these teams they get confidence,” Fernandes said.

Asked directly whether Carrick had got his tactics wrong, the Portuguese midfielder declined to make a direct accusation but placed responsibility for the team’s approach on the coaching staff.

“That’s on the manager and staff to see it, not me. Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable,” he added.

Fernandes’ remarks suggested that he believed United needed to adopt a more aggressive approach, particularly when attempting to win possession and prevent opponents from settling into their rhythm.

Carrick was subsequently informed of his captain’s comments during his post-match press conference and responded by emphasising the importance of effort and commitment.

“There’s a little bit of whatever system you play, whatever tactics you play, if you don’t run, and you don’t run forward, and you don’t run back, you aren’t going to win,” the United boss said.

Although Carrick did not directly name Fernandes in his response, his comments highlighted a different emphasis from that expressed by the midfielder.

While Fernandes focused on pressing and tactical risk-taking, Carrick stressed that players must work hard regardless of the system employed.

The exchange is likely to attract attention because of Fernandes’ position as captain and his importance to the team. Publicly questioning aspects of the tactical approach can increase pressure on a manager already facing scrutiny over results.

However, Fernandes stopped short of explicitly calling for Carrick’s dismissal, while the manager’s response did not directly accuse his captain of undermining him.

The defeat and the contrasting post-match comments nevertheless raised questions about Manchester United’s tactical direction, the players’ execution of the game plan and the level of agreement between the dressing room and coaching staff.

With pressure mounting after the heavy loss, Carrick faces the challenge of restoring confidence, improving performances and ensuring that his players deliver the intensity required in future matches.
