Severe thunderstorms could disrupt power supplies in Mpumalanga on Sunday

Translate

Residents in parts of Mpumalanga could face power cuts and communication disruptions on Sunday, as severe thunderstorms threaten the south-eastern parts of the province.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms from 15:00 until 23:59 on Sunday.

The weather service expects thunderstorms across large parts of Mpumalanga, but warns that some could become severe in the extreme south-east.

Which areas face the severe thunderstorms warning?

SAWS has highlighted the extreme south-eastern parts of Mpumalanga as the areas at risk of severe storms.

Although thunderstorms could develop across much of the province, not every area will experience severe conditions.

Residents in the affected areas should prepare for possible damage to property and interruptions to essential services.

Severe thunderstorms could disrupt electricity supplies and communication networks in affected communities.

Strong winds and lightning can damage electricity infrastructure, while falling trees and branches can bring down power lines.

SAWS warns that the storms could cause short-term disruptions to essential services, including electricity, communication, healthcare and education.

However, the warning does not mean that power cuts will definitely occur.

What damage could the thunderstorms cause?

SAWS warns that severe storms could damage homes, buildings, vehicles and other property.

The storms could also affect informal settlements, infrastructure, livestock and people’s livelihoods.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather, particularly when visibility drops or roads become flooded.

When will the warning end?

The Yellow Level 2 warning will remain in place from 15:00 until 23:59 on Sunday, 1 November.

Residents should keep checking SAWS forecasts and warnings for updates, as weather conditions can change.

Anyone who encounters a fallen electricity line should stay away from it and report it to the relevant electricity provider or municipality.
