The Portuguese Football Federation has provisionally suspended Cristiano Ronaldo after the captain left the national camp in the middle of the international window during the UEFA Nations League.
“Disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, by decision of the Non-Professional Section dated October 9, 2026, to assess the possible disciplinary implications of the incidents reported on October 7, 2026,” the Federation said in a statement.
“Without prejudice to the automatic provisional suspension to which he was subject until the date the proceedings were opened, a non-automatic provisional suspension has been imposed on him, with the urgency of the proceedings acknowledged.”
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was reportedly unhappy with the team selection during Portugal’s Nations League matches against Wales and Norway. Though Ronaldo started against Wales, he was not called on during the Norway clash, both of which Portugal won through goals from Joao Felix.
After a fallout with national team coach Jorge Jesus, Ronaldo left the national camp to join his club Al Nassr.
The case was referred to the FPF’s Disciplinary Investigation Committee on October 10, 2026, and all publicity is prohibited until the investigation is concluded,” the Federation added.
Under Article 160 of the Portuguese Football Federation’s disciplinary regulations, unjustified abandonment of national team duty can result in a suspension of between one and six months. However, no final sanction has been announced in Ronaldo’s case.
Ronaldo holds his country’s records with 146 goals in 234 international appearances.
