Champions tour's Gogel suspended for golf bets

Translate

PGA Tour Champions player Matt Gogel was handed a six-month suspension Wednesday for placing bets on PGA Tour competition.

In a statement, the PGA Tour said Gogel did not bet on tournaments in which he was a participant, but the mere act violated guidelines of the tour's integrity program.

Gogel cooperated throughout the process, the tour said. His suspension began Sunday and will run through Feb. 22, 2027.

Gogel said in a statement posted to X that he unknowingly placed "small recreational wagers on golf" in 2024 and 2025.

"I want to be clear that these wagers were not placed on regular PGA Tour events, PGA Tour Champions events or any tournament in which I participated," Gogel said in his statement. "I would never knowingly violate the integrity of the game of golf. I made an honest mistake and I look forward to playing in 2027 on the PGA Tour Champions."

Gogel, 55, finished tied for 30th last weekend in the Rogers Charity Classic. He has twice finished in the top five on the Champions Tour this season, including a tie for second in the ISPS Handa Senior Open in July at Gleneagles, and has $2.6 million in winnings.
