Emmys 2026 LIVE updates: Widow’s Bay cleans up, wins fourth award; Slow Horses director wins

Good morning and welcome to our live blog of the 78th annual primetime Emmy Awards – or as I like to call them, the American Logies.

I’ll be your live blog host, while deputy lifestyle editor Courtney Thompson will be taking us through the best looks from the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, and lifestyle writer Abby Seaman will be combing through the photos for our red carpet gallery. On the ground, culture editor-at-large Michael Idato will be giving us a front-row seat to the awards (OK, he’s actually in row L, but it’s closer than I’ll ever be). Once the awards kick off, deputy TV editor Meg Watson and culture writers Karl Quinn and Nell Geraets will be blogging their way through the event. You can check out the full list of nominees here.

The morning will go something like this:

• Red carpet from 8am.
• Live broadcast starts at 10am on Binge, hosted by Law and Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay.
• Presenters include Zendaya, Amy Poehler, Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Emmy Rossum, John Mulaney, Macaulay Culkin, Alan Cumming, Jon Hamm, David Harbour, Dan Levy, Julianna Margulies and Florence Pugh.
• The evening will also feature a 30th anniversary celebration of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz, and a 50th anniversary celebration of Charlie’s Angels with Kate Jackson, Cheryl Ladd and Jaclyn Smith.

Mattieu Blazy has reinvigorated Chanel in a way we haven’t seen in a loooooooong time in fashion. So it’s always exciting to see what celebrities are chosen to wear Chanel gowns on the red carpet, and what dresses they wear.

Nicole Kidman and Youn Yuh-jung have both walked the Emmys red carpet in Blazy for Chanel designs that have more in common than the designer behind them. The dresses are similarly white with fine embellishments, and on others, they could be the fashion equivalent of “same word, different font”.

Kidman and Yuh-jung, however, render them completely different. Both legends in their own right, they look the part.

The Fanning sisters are not unlike the Olsens in that they rarely put a fashion foot wrong. Arriving together at the Emmys, Dakota is on support duty for Elle, who is nominated for Margo’s Got Money Troubles.

It’s with this in mind that I’ll hypothesise Dakota didn’t want to overshadow her young sister on such a big night of her career, so has taken the slight style L. Her monochrome Carolina Herrera gown is lovely but comes off as a bit lacklustre next to Elle’s exquisite beaded mint gown that makes her look like total glamour.

The room is starting to get crowded and buzzy. The audience view reveals we have a large proscenium stage with stylised, art deco-inspired curved archway portals on both sides.

The mood board clearly said retro, but luxe. On the far left of the stage there is an oversized, golden Emmy Award on an elevated platform.

We’re 15 minutes to showtime.

Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) and Carey Mulligan (Beef) have both gone for shades of blue for their dresses, and are equal style winners. Edebiri looks gorgeous in a powder blue, tiered dress (a tasteful frill!) that has a touch of red at the back, and worn with simple metallic sandal heels.

Mulligan is in a more vibrant cobalt blue printed strapless gown by The Row, tastefully gathered at the back. With barely there make-up and a slightly tousled up do, it’s a perfectly calibrated look.

I admit it: I got chills when I saw the first images roll through of the Dune and Euphoria star with her pixie cut and soft, feminine make-up. She looks every inch the megawatt star she is in an embellished, plunging platinum gown.

It’s a suitably showstopping look for the 30-year-old, who tonight could become the youngest actress to win outstanding lead actress in a drama series three times and the first black actress to win the category three times thanks to her Euphoria nominations. No matter how many awards she does or doesn’t take home, she knows who she is and she is IT.

It’s like what Spider-Man’s aunt once said (I think): “With great power, comes great responsibility.” She was talking about our moral obligations but could have been speaking about frills in fashion.

A frill can be a powerful thing, but is easily overdone and at times, misplaced. The Emmys have a few case studies for us to consider here. Kristen Bell has chosen a silk sea-moss gown with frill-detailing around the neckline, it’s feminine and suits her well. The frill is not overfrilling.

In a somewhat contrasting look, Jessica Williams has gone for the lavender tiered lace frill, wearing a strapless corseted gown that, I think, would look stunning in person, where you could appreciate the detailing of the lace. But seeing it in photos makes you question it. She looks beautiful either way but it shows how perilous these things can be.

Quinta Brunson has arrived in a cream silk Christian Cowan gown from the spring/summer 2026 runway collection. The dress has been crafted in such a way that it looks like someone (or something?) might have attempted to ravage it off her body. It could have looked out of place, but is elevated to a point of sophistication through the styling with Marco Bicego jewellery, Jimmy Choo heels and clean make-up look which accentuates Brunson’s unquestionable beauty.

Let’s check in with our reader polls. In the most outstanding drama category, Slow Horses is in the lead, while in the outstanding comedy category, it’s Widow’s Bay. In the limited series poll, the Sarah Snook drama All Her Fault is the clear winner.

Yesssssss! It’s Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell here to make all of our Emmy dreams come true. The couple are both nominated, with Rhys up for outstanding lead actor in a comedy for Widow’s Bay and outstanding lead actor in a limited or anthology series for The Beast in Me. Russell, meanwhile, is nominated for outstanding leading actor in a drama for The Diplomat.

(FYI, one of the best compliments I ever received came from my dad, who said I looked just like that woman in The Diplomat, “who always frowns and never brushes her hair”.)

Not only is The Pitt’s Katherine LaNasa a powerhouse on screen, she is married to Grant Show, who played hottie Jake the handyman on Melrose Place. This makes high school me very, very happy.
