Vehicle struck by brick in shocking N2 incident – PHOTOS

A vehicle was struck by a brick while travelling along the N2 in the early hours of Monday morning, once again raising concerns over attacks targeting motorists on the busy highway.

The incident occurred shortly before the Engen garage on the N2.

Crime and safety commentator Yusuf Abramjee also reported the incident on social media, saying a vehicle had been struck with a brick while travelling along the highway.

The circumstances surrounding the attack remain unclear, including whether the driver was injured.

Strong reaction

The news quickly prompted a strong reaction from residents and fellow motorists, many of whom called for urgent action to prevent further attacks on vehicles travelling along the route.

Among the suggestions was the complete enclosure of pedestrian bridges crossing the N2.

One commenter argued that enclosing the bridges could be a faster and cheaper solution than constructing a large wall along the highway.

Others questioned how motorists could be expected to feel safe when objects can be thrown at vehicles travelling at speed.

Concerns were also raised about access points from nearby properties and informal routes leading towards the freeway, with calls for additional fencing and better control of pedestrian movement around the N2.

Longstanding concerns

The latest incident comes amid longstanding concerns about stone- and brick-throwing attacks along sections of Cape Town’s N2 and roads leading to Cape Town International Airport.

The stretch has previously been described as the N2 “Hell Run” because of repeated attacks on motorists.

Previous incidents have included motorists being injured after stones or bricks were thrown through vehicle windows, while some attacks have escalated into robberies and hijackings.

In December 2025, three men, Ndiyabulela Vayi, Thando Nkolongo, and Yamnkela Mdunyelwa, were arrested in connection with the murder of Karin van Aardt during a smash-and-grab on Jakes Gerwel Drive along the N2 near the Cape Town International Airport.

Better surveillance

According to figures from Sanral, the priority zone recorded 621 crime-related events in 2023, 564 in 2024 and 362 during 2025 at the time of its report.

The latest brick-throwing incident has therefore renewed calls for better surveillance, fencing, lighting and policing around bridges and other vulnerable sections of the freeway.
