It was in 1998 that the Metal Gear franchise transformed into its 3D counterpart courtesy of Metal Gear Solid. Now featuring brand-new graphics and the arrival of protagonist, Solid Snake, it marked something of a soft reboot to the original 2D games.
Now, almost three decades on, the Metal Gear Solid franchise is considered one of the best in gaming, but with its creator, Hideo Kojima, leaving Konami following the launch of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain in 2015, the future is looking uncertain for the beloved stealth action series.
In order to see what players would think of a Metal Gear Solid universe without Kojima at the helm, Konami released Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater back in August 2025 but, at the time of writing, a potential Metal Gear Solid 6 has yet to be announced or confirmed.
As such, Konami has revealed that the future of the franchise depends solely on how well both Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater and releases such as Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Volume 2 perform, the latter of which released back in August 2026. However, with this collection currently sitting at a 'Mixed' review rating on Steam, it is not looking good.
Despite not making any major announcements in recent months, it seems as though Konami is in a tricky spot, but the return of the original Solid Snake actor may just give the studio the push it needs.
According to Akio Otsuka, the original Japanese actor to portray Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid, he would be interested in Konami making future games in the franchise, even without the assistance of Kojima. For him, he would love to return to the role, which served as a "sense of pride" for him.
In an interview with Japanese outlet Bunshun, Otsuka said, "There are Metal Gear fans all over the world, and they’ve been waiting patiently for [another one]. So, for their sake, let’s make one more Metal Gear!” When asked if he still felt the same even though Kojima would no longer be at the helm, he continued, "I think, ‘Why not?’ It’s okay to do it [not]? That’s how I feel."
However, over on r/PS5, fans have been discussing whether more titles in the Metal Gear Solid franchise would be a good idea, or whether it is time for the iconic stealth action series to finally rest.
"Legendary franchise," one user wrote. "The story is finished. Not sure what they would do other than remakes (MSX games?). I'd rather they do not milk it and ruin it." Another agreed, adding, "If they do anything with Metal Gear, I'd really rather it be something new. Snake's story is done."
With others hoping that we will eventually receive remakes of Metal Gear 1 and 2 in the same vein as the Resident Evil franchise, it remains to be seen what Konami will do next. For now, however, the future remains uncertain despite rumors that one more remaster compilation, titled Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 3, will be next in line.
